Herbal Medicinal Uses
Comfrey - has several medicinal actions. It is known as a vulnerary and as an astringent. These properties make it useful in the healing of minor wounds, both internal and external. Comfrey can be used for minor injuries of the skin, where it will work to increase cell production, causing wounds to heal over rapidly. It can be used internally for stomach and duodenal ulcers, where it will have the same effect. Comfrey is also demulcent, producing a mucilage that coats and soothes irritated tissues. It will help reduce inflammation and at the same time lessen scarring. Comfrey also has expectorant properties and has a relaxing effect on the respiratory membranes. Since it helps to relax and soothe membranes, it is useful in coughs, asthma, and bronchitis. As an astringent, comfrey can also help control slow bleeding, as in the case of ulcers.
Horsetail is used to treat inflammation of blood vessels and joints, connective tissue diseases, hematuria, poor diuresis connected to electrolyte imbalance, mineral deficiency and poor calcium absorption
St Johns Wort – Nerve pain and damage, multiple sclerosis (MS) is a central nervous system disorder mainly characterized by inflammation, demyelination and axonal injury. Anti-inflammatory agents can be used to ameliorate the disease process. Hypericum perforatum L or St. John’s wort is widely used as an anti-depressant and anti-inflammatory remedy in traditional and herbal medicine.
Wild lettuce - Wild Lettuce is also Known as Opium Lettuce. For a good reason. While it doesn't contain any opiates, it has similar side effects when used - it acts directly on the central nervous system (CNS) to lessen the feeling of pain, just like morphine.
Boswellia - Over the last few years, Boswellia has attracted much attention in the world medical community because it possesses anti-inflammatory properties that are equal to prescription medications without the unpleasant/dangerous side effects. Boswellia works through entirely different mechanisms than anti-inflammatory drugs. Whereas most drugs function as Cox enzyme inhibitors, Boswellia works by inhibiting lipoxygenase enzymes (LOX), which are powerful contributors to inflammation and disease. By inhibiting LOX enzymes, Boswellia effectively blocks leukotriene synthesis. Leukotrienes play a major role in promoting a whole host of age-associated, inflammation-related diseases including joint problems, intestinal disorders, cancer, and lung-related disease. And finally, it appears that Boswellia has the ability to modulate the immune system and inhibit inflammatory activity, thereby helping with a number of autoimmune conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis.
Guaicum - Resin has quite a number of beneficial actions due to its chemical value - it contains resin acids, guaiaretic and hydroguaiaretic
acids, and lignans. Other components include terpenoids (guaiacsaponin), and vanilin. Anti-rheumatic, laxative, diaphoretic, anti-inflammatory and diuretic actions of the plant are associated with its rich chemical content. Guaiacum resin has an advantage over other resins by being not as irritating for the stomach and bowel. Being easy to absorb, it provides fast relief for the symptoms it is taken for. It has been mostly used in herbal medicine for rheumatic conditions and related symptoms. Patients with inflammation and painful joints have been reporting the healing effects of guaiacum. Its anti-inflammatory actions are both helpful in rheumatoid arthritis and chronic rheumatism, lessening recurrence of the attacks.
Corydalis - Dr. Wynn says she has found that you can use a higher dose than the general parameters indicate if needed, but at higher doses “sedation may occur”. How much to use is, as with the other herbs on this list, suggested by the severity of the pain.
Solomon’s Seal (Polygonatum biflorum) - Solomon’s Seal is hand’s down, the most underutilized herb for canine and feline arthritis – I wish it were better known. If I had to pick one herb to promote, this would definitely be it. Michigan herbalist Jim McDonald writes ... “ I don’t think there’s a single other plants I use that so reliably produces such story-worthy results, and as there is far too little information clearly elaborating on Solomon’s Seal’s remarkable virtues…”

Degenerative myelopathy of dogs is a slowly progressive, non-inflammatory degeneration of the white matter of the spinal cord. Affected dogs are usually greater than 5-years-old and develop non-painful weakness of the hind legs that causes an unsteady gait. Early cases may be confused with orthopedic injuries; however, proprioceptive deficits (inability to sense where the limbs are in space) are an early feature of degenerative myelopathy and are not seen in orthopedic disease. Signs slowly progress to paralysis of the back end of the body over 6-36 months, although severity of signs may fluctuate. An MRI or CSF analysis is performed to rule out other causes of spinal cord dysfunction.
- Progressive weakness of the hind limbs.
- Worn nails.
- Difficulty rising.
- Knuckling of the toes.
- Scuffing hind feet.
- Wearing of the inner digits of the rear paws.
- Loss of muscle in the rear legs.
Degenerative (spine) Myelopathy What is it? Degenerative Myelopathy (DM), the myelin and axons are attacked. (Myelin is the insulation around nerve fibers leaving the nerve cell. Axons are long nerve fibers that go from nerve cells to muscles and other parts. They carry the signals from the nerve to the muscles.) This creates an accumulation of inflammatory cells locally and the chronic inflammation destroys the myelin sheath, leading to progressive nerve tissue damage. The damage typically begins in the middle of the back and this is where the most severe damage can be found. The nerve damage results in loss of voluntary and involuntary motor control. It is similar to Multiple Sclerosis in humans. Myelin Sheath is composed of fatty substances and phospholipids which make up a portion of the nerve cell wall membrane. It may provide building blocks for the myelin sheath and nerve tissue in the spinal cord. PROTECTION and REPAIR - See Page 3. Muscle atrophy is having unsteady gait and paralysis which can be some of the symptoms of degenerative myelopathy. Or atrophy of muscles in dogs is very common in aging dogs or dogs that are ill (e.g cachexia) seen in cancer patients or dogs that cannot exercise properly. * See homeopathic Cachexia Health 30ml Symptoms - Degenerative Myelopathy initially affects the rear legs first. The dog may start to drag a foot on walks and the owner can hear or see this. The two middle nails on that weak paw may be worn down. Eventually, a lack of coordination and wobbliness in the gait is seen and the reflexes will slow in the hind feet and legs. Soon afterward, the thigh muscles will start to atrophy and the tail may be limp. Common in Mostly larger breed dogs, Pure breed and cross bread. Since we're not sure whether the cause is the same, we don't know if they can respond as well to these treatments. DM is usually first seen in adult dogs between the ages of 5 and 14 years of age. It is diagnosed mainly by the clinical signs: a progressive weakness and ataxia of the hindquarters, which may come and go, or just get steadily worse. Muscles of the lower back and hindlegs are smaller than normal. Many dogs also have hip dysplasia and/or arthritis of the spine, which complicates the picture. Conventional treatment for these problems (such as Rimadyl or corticosteroids) may initially cause an improvement, but they don't necessarily help the myelopathy. * Vaccination injections severely depletes an a animal of Vitamin C The essential vitamin known as vitamin C is one of the most important elements in an individual’s daily diet. We need Vitamin C to help contribute to good cellular growth, promote function of the circulatory system, and generally help our bodies to develop and maintain themselves. A vitamin C deficiency is a serious issue, and should be caught early and treated with natural foods or dietary supplements that contain plenty of this critical ingredient.
Chiari-like malformation and Syringomyelia are complex conditionswhich affect the brain and spinal cord in dogs, and may be found in some brachycephalic ('short-faced') feline breeds e.g. Persians. ... fluid is forced or sucked into the spinal cord resulting in dilated fluid-filled cavities. The longitudinal cavities in the spinal cord, most often in the cervical region, which may extend for multiple spinal levels. The cavities are lined by dense, gliogenous tissue and may be associated with SPINAL CORD NEOPLASMS; spinal cord traumatic injuries; and vascular malformations.
Syringomyeliais marked clinically by pain and PARESTHESIA, muscular atrophy of the hands, and analgesia with thermoanesthesia of the legs, but with the tactile sense preserved (sensory dissociation).
For Lower extremity spasticity and incontinence may also develop.

Spinal Arachnoid in pets
Spinal Arachnoid cysts The term arachnoid cyst is misleading as there is extramedullary expansion and cord cavitation rather than cyst formation.
Seems most often they are born with the condition - weakness (e.g Arachnoid cysts comprise a nervous system (CNS) disorder in which the arachnoid membrane covering of the central nervous system doesn’t develop properly) or could also be from a trauma.
Arachnoid cysts occur in the cervical and thoracolumbar spinal cord.
Large-breed dogs appear to develop cervical lesions more frequently, whereas small-breed dogs develop lesions more frequently in the thoracolumbar region. This disorder has been more commonly reported in rottweilers. * Spinal arachnoid cysts also occur in cats.
Recommendation: We would be suggesting using the homeopathic DrawingOut drops, and maybe Injury-Surgery drops ( in case it was from trauma) and for symptoms causing Myelopathy use in conjunction with the Spine Set.
* Myelopathy describes any neurologic deficit related to the spinal cord. When due to trauma, it is known as (acute) spinal cord injury. When inflammatory, it is known as myelitis.
